Cost - The important Questions
Working in the apparel industry can be expensive however, the rewards can be worth it! It is important to understand what it takes to produce a collection and sustain a business in fashion. I have heard many people speculate about how much money it takes to start a business and I will provide my breakdown of what I have learned in my experience.
What it takes to start a business in Fashion - $5-8K - This is just to begin the business operations side.
What it takes to produce a small collection- $5-20k - "Small" depends on your idea of small but bare minimum without hiring anyone to do the development would range about $5-9k and $12-20K to outsource a collection of 10-25 garments (with simple design details). Larger companies may produce collections of 25-50 pieces and a minimum of three colorways per design. Do the math on that and you can see why costs can swiftly double/triple/etc.
If you do not have funding to sustain your company for one year, this is also an issue. The fashion cycle is long and most small companies will not be able to find someone to cover costs until the profits come in. My point is, fashion isn't any cheaper than any other start up business. It takes funding, and a viable cash flow. If these topics are not addressed before you launch, your chances at achieving success become closer to odds of winning the lottery.
